Summer Internships

FLC is now offering a training program to law students in the area of fisheries and seafood law. The intern will be exposed not only to lectures and workshops on fisheries and seafood law, but also will be placed with a not-for-profit organization specialized in a related field. The intern will be subjected to a variety of topics including fisheries management, seafood safety, labeling, traceability etc.

FLC is committed to enhancing access to justice to coastal fishing communities and small-scale fisheries.  Small-scale fisheries make an important contribution to nutrition, food security, sustainable livelihoods and poverty alleviation. Despite this significant contribution, the issues constraining the sustainable development of small-scale fisheries remain poorly understood.  The intern will develop a working knowledge of global small-scale fishery issues and work hands-on in this field. The internship is designed to further the guidelines set forth by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation. The spirit embodied in these guidelines is the promotion of responsible and sustainable fisheries management.

The intern will have numerous opportunities to engage in in-depth conversation with fishermen and leaders in coastal communities and will be offered many opportunities to write and publish articles on topics of their desire as well as engage & collaborate on one research paper. The intern will receive a certificate in Fisheries and Seafood Law.

FLC will work with each student to develop a work plan that meets the students interest and will help arrange for summer placements at suitable NGOs. This community-based learning initiative is meant for those students with strong environmental law interest to interact with grass root organizations and to integrate their knowledge with practical legal issues facing these organizations.

Applications are now open – interested students can email their resume and statement of interest to internship@fishlaw.org
