The Fisheries Law Centre is approved as a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Provider by The Law Society of British Columbia. FLC is now offering the following CLE / CPD courses in Vancouver.

 

Introduction to Fisheries Law  

This course will introduce participants to the emerging and specialized area of fisheries law. Various topics such as Fisheries Management Regulations, Seafood Regulations, International Law, and Environmental Crimes will be explored. Special attention will be given to access to justice in small-scale fisheries and coastal and aboriginal communities. Fisheries labour issues and recent developments in Employment Insurance will also be examined. Following the lecture, participants should be able to:

  • Demonstrate general knowledge of legal issues that fisheries law entails
  • Demonstrate general knowledge of special issues as they relate to Small- Scale Fisheries
  • Demonstrate general knowledge of legal developments in the area of seafood regulations
  • Demonstrate general knowledge of recent developments in the international arena
  • Demonstrate an understanding of issues relating to access to justice in coastal communities

 

 

Fisheries Management Regulations

This course will cover fisheries management regulations including: licencing requirements for harvesters; legal issues arising around fishing quotas, catch shares, and community fishing licences; and other schemes such as Territorial Use Rights in Fishing (TURFs), Marine Conservation Easements (MCE), Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), Limited Access Privilege Program (LAPPs) and Community Development Quotas (CDQs). This course will cover the latest legal updates in this area.  This course will include a comparative element and hence will cover laws in other provinces and countries. This course will also cover the latest developments in Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated Fishing (IUU), as well as the Port State Measures Agreement. Following the lecture, participants should be able to:

  • Demonstrate general knowledge of the various legal tools available in regulating fisheries
  • Demonstrate general knowledge of special issues as they relate to Small- Scale Fisheries
  • Demonstrate general knowledge of legal developments in the area of IUU on a global level

 

Seafood Regulations I: Selling Fish in British Columbia

This course will cover Seafood Regulation in BC. We will be covering licencing requirements for fish processing plants, fish buying stations, fish brokers and fish vendors. Special attention will be given to legal issues arising in Direct Marketing of Seafood with special emphasis on Community Supported Fisheries. Food safety inspection requirements will also be covered. This course will primarily focus on BC. Following the lecture, participants should be able to:

  • Demonstrate general knowledge of the various type of licencing requirements to process and/or sell fish in BC
  • Demonstrate general knowledge of special legal issues as they relate to direct marketing of seafood in BC
  • Demonstrate general knowledge of special legal issues as they relate to starting and operating a Community Supported Fishery in BC

 

 

Seafood Regulations II: Labeling, Advertisement, Packaging and Traceability Requirements in British Columbia

This course will cover seafood labeling and traceability requirements in BC. First, we will cover seafood traceability guidelines, standards, and requirements within BC’s wild fisheries and aquaculture sectors. Second, we will cover federal and provincial labeling, advertisement and packaging requirements. Finally, we will cover recent legal initiatives and developments to combat seafood fraud both locally and globally. Following the lecture, participants should be able to:

  • Demonstrate general knowledge of seafood traceability requirements
  • Demonstrate general knowledge of federal and provincial requirements for seafood labeling and packaging
  • Demonstrate general knowledge of legal developments in the area of seafood fraud globally
